Paint Event Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Who can attend?

Paint programs have an audience designation—children, teen, adult, and senior listed on each event announcement. A recent addition includes “multi-generation” or “mixed age” events, which can span age six to 90+. This is a wonderful way for grandparents, generational relatives, or community members to engage in an activity that serves everyone.

Do I need prior experience?

No. I teach to beginner level, but all painting abilities are welcome!

How do I register for a paint event?

Most libraries use online registration; you can use this website to navigate to their online registration, or go to their library website directly. If you ever have any trouble, ask your local librarian and they will be happy to help you sign up!

How do I find out about paint events in my local area?

Check the Calendar page of this website for upcoming events in your local community and contact your nearby libraries to subscribe to their monthly email list, newsletter, and/or calendar of events.

What do I need to bring?

Events include all materials for a successful painting experience—including canvases, brushes, palettes, drop cloths, water cups, and any special tools for the given lesson. Attendees are encouraged to dress to paint!

How long does a paint event take?

Depending on the audience, programs are designed to be approximately 90 minutes in length. Some adult programs may require up to two hours, and some programs for young children are limited to an hour to accommodate their respective attention span.

Do I take my painting home that day?

Yes, all paintings are completed during the lesson and available to take with you the same day!

In case of inclement weather, I advise participants to bring a plastic bag to cover their paintings so an unexpected rainstorm doesn’t flood their creations on the way home! Some painters keep a rectangular, cardboard tray in their cars on paint days, so the still-wet masterpieces stay put on the car ride and don’t ruin their upholstery.

What am I painting on?

While most events feature acrylic paintings on canvas, some programs explore other media surfaces, spanning wood blocks, fabric tote bags, metal pizza pans, and more.

Why acrylic?

Acrylic paint is accessible, affordable, and suitable for a broad range of surfaces and painting techniques while being a more elevated paint choice than Tempera or Watercolor. It dries quickly, cleans up with water, and is fairly “forgiving” to correct missteps and layer when desired.

What if I get paint on my clothes?

Truth be told, acrylic paint is not the easiest thing to clean off of fabric. I do advise attendees “not to wear your favorite shirt” when joining for a paint event, but stains are largely removable with soap and water and a little Lestoil for stubborn stains.

What do these events cost for attendees?

Any of my grant-funded paint events–typically held at local libraries supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council–are fully-funded. This means there is no cost to you!
